"Honey? I think you have a twin."
Amber Brickman used to dream of unearthing ancient civilizations with her soulmate. But now she's the Assistant Fire Marshal, sifting through burn sites while the walls are still warm, looking for evidence of arson. It's the life she's pieced together after her fiancé was murdered just weeks before their wedding. Ashes are easier to sort out than broken hearts, and paperwork doesn't leave you lonely.
She's not asking for more, but she's about to get it when her mother sees a woman on the news who looks and sounds just like her. Her mother is convinced she's found Amber's twin, stolen at birth.
Amber wants nothing to do with this insanity, but the more she resists, the more her mother delves into the past, desperate for the truth no matter what the cost. The only way to find it may be to open up and risk everything -- her job, her heart -- but digging up her past will be trickier than any burnt-out building.
Jane Lebak's novels have taken readers through the realm of angels and the funnier sidestreets of New York City. In Half Missing, she explores how the past impacts on the present, and how the losses of three different women can braid together into a stronger future.

This book is the best I've read in a long time, which is huge praise considering how many good books I read. I downloaded the sample first, and then bought the book. I started reading for a few minutes at bedtime at 12:00 and didn't stop until I finished at 3:30 am. I'm not sure where to start--a heroine with an unusual and interesting occupation--that of a fire marshal, a point of view secondary character who's a midwife (with spot-on details)--a tale of mystery, family love, romantic love, and healing old loss and grief. I loved the characters and the plot. I didn't want the story to end.Product details

Half Missing edition by Jane Lebak Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I loved this story. You get so involved with each character and their part and concerns in this story. I was rooting for all of them but just a few. Great read.
I love strong, independent heroines who know how to handle tough situations --both family and professionally. This book had in-depth details about Midwife and Fire Marshal careers without taking away from the plot. And it had humor--I love humor. Would recommend.
This book ended way too soon. It was over before I was willing to let go of the pages. This book had me stuck between the pages and wouldn't let me go, then it was over while I am left wanting to go back to the beginning, to immerse myself in this amazing story again.
Thorough research and excellent writing make this a novel worth reading. I was sucked in from the very beginning. I read this nearly a year ago, so I went back to skim it before writing this and found myself wanting to read it all over again.
If you like a novel that has all the vital elements (plot, character, setting) developed to a great degree, look no further. I read this novel twice, and am sorry it is over yet a second time. The plot is excellent--what happens if twins are separated at birth,) and then a chance occurrence brings back all the memories which demand resolution. The characters are woven together with extreme insight. I was taken into the story and couldn't put it down, even the second time. There is humor interwoven all through the chapters. All the loose ends are tied up at the end to the satisfaction of the reader. This is a book you wont forget.
This was the first book I've read by this author and I can't wait to read more! The premise intrigued me--twins separated at birth with one raised by a different family, the biological mother the only one who insists she gave birth to two babies and not just one. The characterization was excellent, especially of the two mothers, and I loved the way the girls slowly connected with each other, overcoming their resistance and finally valuing each other as a twin sister. The author weaves in humor amidst the sorrow and grief and makes the community one I'd love to be a part of.
Thank you, Jane Lebak for a well-written, entertaining and informative book!
I have read Ms. Lebak's novel and read it again. The concept is intriguing, a twin baby stolen and sold to another couple at birth. Years later, her biological mother and sister discover her and seek to connect with her. The author takes this material beyond the mere dramatic by touching on all those involved -- both families, both young women, the broader circles connected with them -- and she does it in a way that makes the reader care about all of them. The suspense holds to the very end. In the midst of it all, Ms. Lebak's signature humor is present. It gives life and a sense of reality to the characters, helping to turning them in the reader's mind from creations to genuine people caught up in an incredible situation.
