A leading figure in American landscape painting, Charles E. Burchfield (1893-1967) recorded understated beauty and quiet drama as well as turbulent changes of weather. His personal symbols and abstract conventions formed by sinuous lines and geometric patterns evoke sound, season, movement, and mood. Best known for his watercolors, Burchfield also created intricate and stylish wallpaper designs, one of which is reproduced in this calendar. The twelve images presented here--among them Poplar Trees, Clearing Sky, Early Spring, Wind-Blown Asters, Marshy Meadows, Sunset at the Bay, and Afterglow--convey the lifelong fascination and delight that Burchfield found in all things natural.

It is remarkable what Charles Burchfield could do with what might be considered ordinary subjects taken from a Midwestern field or December sky. I think he will ultimately be remembered for the nature paintings that he deeply imbued with his personal symbolism of both vision and sound. Check out his "Wind-Blown Asters" (1951) in this calendar if you'd like to see how he incorporated movement into his paintings. He used `agitrons' (cartoon-strip squiggles) to indicate movement, `squeans' (asterisks with empty centers) for shafts of sunlight, and `blurgits' (Burchfield describes them as `shrill high pinpoints') for the sounds of crickets. The overall effect is Expressionist rather than cartoonish. Burchfield was a completely original watercolorist. All of the watercolors reproduced for this calendar consist of natural subjects: "Clearing Sky" (1917); "Red Birds and Beech Trees" (1924); "Early Spring" (1966 - 1967); "Wind-Blown Asters" (1951); "Euclid Avenue" (1916)--a procession of trees; "Marsh Meadows" (1916); "Poplar Trees" (1916); "Sunset at the Bay" (1910); "Untitled (Clump of Purple Trees)" (1915); "Afternoon in the Grove" (1916); "Afterglow" (1916); and "Untitled (Gothic Window Trees)" (1918).
